Bogotá, Colombia's capital and a megacity, operates as a capital district, granting Bogotá administrative autonomy similar to that of a department. The Mayor of Bogotá and the City Council manage urban affairs within the city's boundaries. While the Metropolitan Region Bogotá-Cundinamarca was established in 2020, it remains under development as a planning and coordination entity for the wider metropolitan area.
In 2019 Bogotá achieved significant progress in environmental and urban accessibility metrics. The city recorded a 54% reduction in NO₂ levels since 2000. Bogotá also leads the region in bikeway accessibility, with 50% of its residents living near bike lanes, demonstrating the city’s emphasis on active and sustainable transportation. Additionally, public space accessibility is exemplary, with 96% of residents living nearby open public space, making it one of the highest-performing Latin American cities.
