Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and a megacity, is governed by two city corporations: Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation, established in 2011 to improve urban governance and service delivery. The broader Dhaka Metropolitan area, which includes surrounding municipalities like Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Savar, is a formally-defined planning region but without formal governance boundaries or administration. Metropolitan planning is ensured by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, a statutory development authority under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, responsible for urban planning, land use regulation, and infrastructure development across the metropolitan area.
Dhaka showcased progress in urban greenness, achieving a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index of 0.6, a 50% increase compared to a 0.5 score in 2010. This index measures vegetation health and density on a scale of 0 to 1.
